George Zhao

George Zhao is a musician with a diverse practice that encompasses electroacoustic composition, accordion performance, and private music tuition. He is a graduate of Shenyang Conservatory of Music in China and a PhD candidate at Rhodes University in South Africa.

Composing

Specialising in electroacoustic music, George draws inspiration from ambient and lowercase music, acoustic ecology, and the philosophy of play. He crafts compositions that engage listeners with sounds of daily life and has showcased his performances at international events, including the Musicacoustica-Beijing Festival, Shanghai International Electroacoustic Music Week and Canberra International Music Festival.

Performing

George has been playing the accordion since his childhood, developing a passion for folk music. He has a particular interest in Eastern Asian, Southeastern Asian, Eastern European, and, more recently, Southeastern European folk tunes. His performances frequently feature these influences at community events, weddings, and parties. George has been featured at various local events, such as the National Multicultural Festival.

Teaching

George is dedicated to offering private tuition in accordion and piano to children. He believes in delivering a comprehensive music education that goes beyond technical skills to help students establish a positive character and a healthy self-image. George strives to be an inspiring presence in his students' lives, aiming to bring happiness through music and support their personal growth throughout their musical journey.
